What inspired you to volunteer?

Catherine, along with her one-year-old daughter Ro, found her calling in volunteering with Songs & Smiles. With a background in social care and a desire to connect with people beyond her usual social circle, Catherine saw Songs & Smiles as a beautiful opportunity to bridge generational gaps and spread joy within her community.

During maternity leave my social network was limited to parents of a similar age as me, I missed the diversity. I had volunteered with older people before and Songs & Smiles seemed like a lovely way to create connection between the generations.

Highlights of Volunteering

For Catherine, the highlight of volunteering is the deep connection she feels with the older adults and the heart-warming bond they share with her daughter. Witnessing their excitement on Ro's birthday and seeing them watch her grow up has been incredibly special. Volunteering isn't just about attending sessions—it's about encouraging those lasting friendships and contributing meaningfully to the lives of others.

For me, volunteering is even nicer than coming along as a participant, it connects me more with the older people. I was so sad when I thought I couldn’t carry on volunteering as I was going back to work, I felt a real sense of loss at not being able to go anymore. But I managed to change my days with work and I’m really pleased that I can continue!

Impact on Catherine

Volunteering at Songs & Smiles has enriched Catherine's life by fostering a stronger connection to her local community and people of different ages. It's given her a sense of purpose and belonging, allowing her to contribute while also receiving the warmth and joy of intergenerational interactions. Plus, being able to volunteer alongside her daughter adds an extra layer of fulfilment and mutual support.

Volunteering for Songs & Smiles is special because I get to pitch in and help out, instead of just sitting back and receiving. During my maternity leave, it felt great to be part of something and lend a hand to others. It’s lovely to have a volunteering opportunity where I can do it with my child. Ro gets looked after by the older adults while I do the name badges, and I think they quite like that. It’s not a one sided experience - I’m using a service and also contributing to it.

Encouragement to Potential Volunteers

To anyone considering volunteering with Songs & Smiles, Catherine's message is clear: Absolutely go for it! It's an incredibly worthwhile and joyful experience that feels more like hanging out than traditional volunteering. The natural, equitable atmosphere and the genuine connections formed make it a truly unique and fulfilling opportunity.

Absolutely do it! It’s really worthwhile and the easiest thing to do - I get to know some older people and they get to know my daughter. It doesn’t feel like any of the other baby groups I go to. It’s really joyful, I love it!

Interaction with The Together Project

Catherine found the process of joining The Together Project seamless and impressive, a stark contrast to her previous volunteering experiences. The smooth onboarding process speaks volumes about The Together Project's dedication to making volunteering accessible and enjoyable for all involved.

I’ve done lots of volunteering in the past and usually the onboarding is such a hassle. I was super impressed with how slick it was.

Feedback and Wishes

While Catherine's experience with Songs & Smiles has been overwhelmingly positive, she does have one wish—that sessions were also held during half-term breaks. This speaks to the deep impact the programme has had on her life and her eagerness to continue being part of it.

I’ve had a really great time! My only feedback is that I wish it was on over half terms! When I don’t go, I really miss it.
