From Songs & Smiles to marathon miles: Aoife's story
Introducing Aoife
Challenge undertaken
The TCS London Marathon: On Sunday 21 April Aoife is gearing up to conquer the iconic London Marathon, one of the most popular marathons in the world. The route takes in many of London's landmarks including Buckingham Palace, The Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf.
But she's not just running for herself — she's running to make a difference to people’s lives.
We got in touch with Aoife recently, let's dive into her inspiring story and her heartfelt reasons for taking on this monumental challenge.
Why The Together Project?
It all began when Aoife's son was just 3 months old. Seeking meaningful activities, they stumbled upon Songs & Smiles — a weekly intergenerational music group for 0-4 year olds, their grownup and older adults living in care homes/assisted living schemes. Songs & Smiles quickly became a cherished part of their routine. Witnessing her son's joy as he formed connections with fellow children and care home residents fuelled Aoife's passion for The Together Project's mission. Now, she's determined to give back in a BIG way by running the London Marathon.
Why run?
Almost a year ago, she cheered on her husband Gerry as he tackled the London Marathon with such enthusiasm and energy. The atmosphere in London was absolutely electrifying—she couldn't help but catch the running bug! So, fuelled by the excitement of the moment, she decided to throw her name into the ballot.
However, as the weeks passed, doubts started creeping in: “Running? Me? I'm not exactly a fan. And let's not forget, I just had a baby six months ago!”
Panic set in—what had she done? But then she reminded herself, getting a spot in the London Marathon from the ballot is like winning the lottery, right? Wrong!
So here she is, facing the challenge head-on. A self-proclaimed non-runner taking on the daunting task of completing 26.2 miles!
Target set: Aoife has set herself a target of raising £500 to support The Together Project's invaluable work. The photo of Aoife (top) was taken after a 20 mile run last weekend so she’s well on her way for the big day!
Amount raised so far: Currently standing at £290 from family and friends. Every pound raised will directly contribute to expanding and sustaining The Together Project's impactful programmes, ensuring that more families/carers and older adults can benefit from the magic of intergenerational connections.
Would you do it again?
Training for the marathon hasn't been easy. Balancing the demands of a toddler, her job, and rigorous training has pushed Aoife to her limits. Yet, through the sweat and the tears, she's found immense fulfilment in pursuing this goal.
Advice for challengers
Running a marathon is undeniably demanding. It requires grit, perseverance, and a willingness to push through obstacles. Yet, that’s the point — the challenge itself is what fuels growth and accomplishment. After all, if it were effortless, it wouldn't hold the same significance. So, as you embark on this journey, remember to prioritise self-care amidst the rigors of training. Your well-being is paramount, ensuring that you can rise to the challenges ahead with resilience and determination.
