Celebrating Songs & Smiles: Our Family Arts Award nomination

Hello, I’m Jenny Reed, Content & Communications Manager at The Together Project, and I’m absolutely delighted to share that Songs & Smiles has been shortlisted for Best Family Arts Activity in the Family Arts Awards 2024! This is a fantastic honour for our team. Each week, I see the magic that unfolds when little ones, their grown-ups, and older people come together through the joy of music—and it’s nothing short of inspiring.

The heart of Songs & Smiles

Songs & Smiles began with a simple idea: to bring generations together to share songs, play, and meaningful connections. Over time, it’s blossomed into so much more. When I hear about children and their grownups who find the session so heartwarming and can’t wait to return each week, and older participants who say the sessions make their day feel brighter, I’m reminded of just how special this work is. These moments of connection are why we do what we do, and I’m so grateful to be part of a team dedicated to making them happen.

The Family Arts Awards celebrate exactly this type of work—programmes that connect families, support older people, and make arts experiences accessible to everyone. This year’s awards recognise a wonderful group of organisations who are tackling issues close to our hearts, like mental health, isolation, and the need for creative spaces in communities.

Why connection matters

The connections built in Songs & Smiles are powerful, and I believe they’re needed now more than ever. As our world changes, the need for community only grows. It’s easy to feel disconnected, but at Songs & Smiles, everyone belongs. Parents share how special it is to see their little ones forming relationships with people of all ages, while older participants often tell us these sessions bring them a new sense of joy and purpose. When I’m at a session I can see these bonds forming right in front of me, and it’s something very special, joyful moments that I carry with me long after the session ends.

Looking forward

This nomination is a true celebration of the entire Songs & Smiles community, and I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey. To all the families, older people, care home staff, group leaders, and volunteers who make Songs & Smiles a success—you’re the reason this project is so special. We’re excited for what’s to come and to expand our reach so even more communities across the UK can experience the joy of Songs & Smiles.

Thank you to the Family Arts Campaign for recognising our work, and to everyone who has supported us along the way. Fingers crossed for the 28th of November when we find out who has won!
