Why We Sing 1950s Classics with Babies and Toddlers

When you step into a Songs & Smiles session, you will see colourful scarves floating through the air, bubbles popping, and families singing along together. It looks like the sweetest scene of fun - and it really is! But behind every song and activity, there is also an intentional plan at work.

Our one-hour intergenerational sessions are carefully designed by an Early Years music therapist who specialises in working with adults living with dementia. Every element is crafted to boost child development while simultaneously supporting cognitive health for older adults.

Here is a peek behind the scenes at how our sessions work and why each part matters.

The Music & Movement

We kick off every session with a lively, structured musical routine. Because both young minds and older brains process information best with short periods of focused concentration, we stick to familiar weekly patterns and intentional pacing.

During the music portion, we explore:

  • Speed, Volume, Beats & Movement: Varying these musical elements helps young children build crucial early language skills, spatial awareness, and auditory processing.

  • Instruments, Scarves & Bubbles: Hands-on play with tactile props enhances fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination for little ones.

  • 50s, 60s, and 70s Classics Alongside Nursery Rhymes: We mix traditional nursery rhymes with nostalgic hits from past decades. These familiar tunes are powerful memory-unlockers for care home residents, helping them engage and connect effortlessly. It’s great fun for parents and carers too!

The Meet & Mingle

The second half of the hour shifts into an informal, low-pressure social time. It gives parents, guardians, and residents a chance to relax, chat, and enjoy complimentary drinks and snacks.

This unstructured time provides meaningful developmental and social benefits:

  • For Toddlers: Practicing social confidence and empathy in a warm, welcoming, multi-generational environment.

  • For Babies: Experiencing gentle care from older generations, supporting early social confidence and sensory comfort.

  • For Parents: Building real connections and making new friends with other local parents and residents.

Just a note! There is zero pressure to let residents hold them. Your comfort and safety are the top priorities, and you are always in control of how you and your child participate.

Real Impact for Families

The combination of structured music and multi-generational connection makes a lasting impact—one mum of a 12-month-old even credits Songs & Smiles for her daughter learning her very first words, "tap tap" (for the claves) and "pop" for the bubbles! According to our 2025 Annual Report, 71% of parents and guardians agreed or strongly agreed that "Songs & Smiles helped my child grow in confidence, empathy, and social skills."

Whether your child is learning their first words or building social skills before heading off to nursery or school, Songs & Smiles offers a rich, nurturing space to grow alongside our older neighbours.
